Whether it’s football, education, the English Language, job opportunities, or curiosity about the monarchy, there are a lot of things that draw people to the UK. Here is a roundup from expats in the UK of the basic things to be excited about, especially if you plan to stay in the country for a long time.
Â
1. The air is great
The air in the UK is kept clean and clear with very little pollution, especially in comparison to a lot of other countries out there. And more and more measures are being taken to make the air even cleaner. (Curious about those? Check them out here.)
Â
2. There is an efficient system of ambulances and competent paramedics
The emergency system is made up of kind and well-trained professionals who provide the most appropriate response for any of your health emergencies. Skilled paramedics can treat you in your home, take you to hospital or do both.
Â
Â
3. Schools are free
The UK’s world-class schools are free for everyone. Well-trained teachers give children the best education using progressive teaching methods. Moreover, they don’t just care about your child’s academic performance – they also pay attention to their personal wellbeing.
Â
4. Sport is a religion
Football is the most popular sport in the UK, followed by cricket. People turn up with quite the passion and are always ready to troll the fans of other clubs. Expect quite a lot of sport jokes. If you were a football fan in your country, you’ll fit right in. If you don’t like football, you may just approach a lot of weekends with a sigh.
Â
5. Religion is a sport
The UK is a country where anybody is free to practise their own religion. Like most things in the country, as long as you’re not hurting anybody or offending anybody most people don’t care. Just try not to randomly bring up religious opinions around people. You might just find that they’ve suddenly gone deaf.
Â
6. The people are very nice (mostly)
People in the UK can be very respectful and kind. Folks here are genuinely some of the most polite and respectful people in the world when it comes to other people’s rights and beliefs. Sure there might be a few odd elements but these are the exception rather than the norm.
Â
7. The NHS
The UK’s healthcare system is one of the best (if not the best) in the world – and it’s free.
Â
8. Transport system is great – despite the bad press
Trains, buses, trams and taxis … the UK transportation system actually works. The bus is the most accessible mode of transport for most people, and won’t have you tearing out your hair. Just be careful you don’t miss the last bus home.
Â
9. Amazing and historic scenes
The houses are relatively small but all very beautiful and a lot of people have lovely gardens depending on where you live. There are trees and flowers all around. The houses are a mixture of new buildings as well as old ones. You can easily find people living in houses over 200 years old but still lovely!
There are many amazing places in the UK with a rich history that you could visit. If you wanted to go sightseeing, you could run out of money or time but never remarkable things to see.
Â
10. Diversity is welcome
No matter who you are, there is a place for you. The UK is without a doubt one of the most tolerant places in the world. And the people actually celebrate their multiculturalism.
