There are different scholarships in Europe available for Nigerian students.

In another post, we presented the northern European (also known as Nordic or Scandinavian countries) and the free or low-cost tuition that they offer. In this post, we will present the available scholarships on offer in these Nordic countries.

Typically for each country, there are scholarships from the government as well as individual universities or non-governmental organisations.

Denmark

Here are some available scholarships for international students who wish to study in Denmark.

Erasmus Mundus

The Erasmus programme is strictly for EU students. But the Erasmus Mundus is open to both EU and non-EU students. Through the Erasmus Mundus scheme, you can apply for a scholarship to study specific Master’s degree programmes.

The courses are offered jointly by a Danish institution and another European university or college. Students and scholars must contact the individual Erasmus Mundus Master’s courses to learn more about scholarships and application procedures.

Danish government scholarships 

The Danish government provides scholarship opportunities each year for highly qualified full-degree students from non-EU countries. These scholarships consist of two parts and can be given as full or partial tuition fee waivers and/or grants towards covering the living costs of the student. Danish universities are responsible for selecting the beneficiaries, so any applicant must consult the university of his choice directly.

In order to be eligible for a Danish government scholarship, you must be…

  • a citizen of a country outside the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland
  • enrolled in a full degree higher education programme
  • granted a time-limited residence permit in Denmark due to education

You are not eligible for a Danish government scholarship if you…

  • are seeking admission to an Artistic Higher Education Institution
  • have a legal claim to the rights of Danish citizens
  • have been granted a residence permit at the time of admission by the Danish Aliens Consolidations Act §9c, subsection 1, as the child of a foreign citizen who has been granted a residence permit in accordance with the Danish Aliens Consolidations Act §9m, and who is a citizen of a country that is not acceded to the EU or covered by the EEA agreement
  • are a student who is eligible for a grant in accordance with Danish Law regarding the State Education Fund

Finland

Here are some of the scholarships available for foreign students in Finland.

University of Helsinki

The University of Helsinki offers scholarships to Master’s students from foreign countries. These scholarships for new students will be awarded on the basis of overall academic assessment, previous academic performance and possible letters of motivation. The grounds presented by applicants in their grant applications will also be taken into consideration.

To apply, go through the list of available Master’s programmes and select your preferred option. Follow the provided instructions and apply for a Master’s degree programme. Then apply for a scholarship with the same form used for the Master’s application.

The University of Turku

The University of Turku supports merited and motivated students with generous scholarships. Scholarships are offered to international students for both Bachelor’s and Master’s level studies.

The scholarships are awarded based on academic merits. Applying for a scholarship is simple. You can apply for the 2-year or 3-year UTU scholarship at the same time as applying for admission to one of the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes if you are subject to tuition fees.  All you need to do is just to indicate “yes” in the appropriate questions on your application form for the programme.

Sweden

Here are some opportunities available for international students in Sweden.

Swedish Institute Scholarships

The Swedish Institute (SI) is a government agency that offers scholarship opportunities to international students and researchers looking to study in Sweden. Check the site to browse through different available options.

KTH Scholarship

The KTH Scholarship covers the full tuition fee of a one or two year Master’s programme.

The scholarship is awarded primarily on the basis of academic excellence and the selection process is undertaken in parallel with the admissions process. Only applicants who fulfil the admission requirements of the programme applied for are eligible for a scholarship. After the applicants have been assessed for admission, an assessment of applicants for the scholarship is made based on the following criteria:

  • The applicant’s grades (GPA or equivalent)
  • The ranking of the university that awarded the applicant’s bachelor’s degree
  • The applicant’s motivation, relevant work experience and extra-curricular activities
  • The applicant’s motivation how they will contribute to the sustainable development goals with a master’s degree from KTH

The Lund University Global Scholarship programme

The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is a selective, merit-based scholarship established with the intention of recognising and aiding top academic students from outside the EU or European Economic Area.

To be able to apply and be considered for a Lund University Global Scholarship, you must first have applied to the programme(s) or free-standing course(s) you wish to study at Lund University. Visit the national application website to do so.

Malmö University Master’s Scholarship

Each year, Malmö University offers a limited number of scholarships to qualified master students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who are required to pay tuition fees. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, experience and motivation. They cover partial or up to the full tuition fee but do not cover other expenses, such as living expenses.

Uppsala University scholarships for prospective students

There are a number of scholarships available each year for fee-paying international students who are applying to an international Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at Uppsala University.

Some scholarships are specifically designated for students who are applying to one of Uppsala University’s Master’s programmes, while others are open to both Master’s and Bachelor’s applicants.
